Practical guidance on product specification, detailing and performance.
Our premium Mount Gambier limestone is quarried directly from the historic Marte deposits in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia. Formed over millions of years from compressed marine origins, this authentic natural limestone offers incredible textural depth and warm, earthy tones ranging from light, milky creams to rich biscuit colours. We are proud to be an end-to-end South Australian limestone supplier, extracting and processing the stone locally.
Yes. Because it is a 100% natural material drawn directly from the earth, subtle variations in tone, texture, and fossilization are an inherent and celebrated characteristic of the stone. This organic variation is what gives architect designed limestone homes their depth, warmth, and sense of permanence, ensuring no two facades are ever exactly alike.
Absolutely. While our South Australian building limestone blocks are renowned for creating enduring exterior facades, their tactile warmth makes them equally captivating inside the home. For a truly cohesive architectural statement, many designers specify a double-skin limestone block construction. This method uses two layers of limestone block with an airgap in between, meaning the natural stone is exposed on both the exterior facade and the interior walls, with no need for any additional linings. Alternatively, our blocks and cladding are frequently used to ground interior spaces through bespoke feature walls, grand entrance foyers, and hand-carved fireplaces.
A: Yes. We understand that every project is different. In addition to our standard ashlar blocks and established library of more than 30 limestone mould profiles, we work closely with architects, developers, and builders to translate design intent and produce custom limestone elements suited to both contemporary and traditional stone projects. Combining traditional craftsmanship with modern production technology, we deliver custom limestone elements with exceptional precision, consistency, and finish. Our limestone library includes skirtings, eaves, window and door lintels, architraves, wall bands, and corbels, as well as structural columns, column capitals, and plinths. We welcome new design challenges.

A: Bruhn Limestone is a business with over 80 years of specialized quarrying expertise. We do not simply import and resell stone; we extract, cut, profile, and deliver it ourselves. This deep, end-to-end stewardship of the material guarantees absolute quality control and allows us to collaborate professionally with architects and master stonemasons to realise highly bespoke architectural visions.
Natural limestone contains extremely low crystalline silica compared with many other building stones and engineered quartz products.

Yes. Limestone performs well across both Class 1 (residential) and Class 6 (commercial) applications, from feature walls and facades to full masonry systems.
Both. Standard profiles are produced in our workshop. Rusticated and custom finishes are often hand-profiled on site by skilled stonemasons for a refined, project-specific outcome.
Rustication is a surface treatment where the face of the stone is hand-profiled or recessed to create depth, shadow and articulation across the facade.
For high-performance wall systems, a cavity and vapour-permeable barrier are often recommended. This supports moisture management, durability and thermal performance.
Yes. Independent modelling confirms that Mount Gambier limestone is a highly sustainable, low-impact building material. Because it is locally quarried and requires minimal processing, it delivers up to a 70% reduction in upfront embodied carbon compared to conventional materials. As a dense, multi-functional natural stone, it provides exceptional thermal mass to naturally regulate indoor temperatures and support energy-efficient design. Furthermore, its inherent durability minimizes the need for synthetic cladding layers, ensuring the material can be seamlessly reused or recycled at the end of its lifespan.
Natural limestone provides exceptional thermal mass. It works by passively absorbing heat during the day and gradually releasing it as temperatures drop at night. Compared to lightweight construction systems, our limestone blocks actively moderate indoor climates, significantly reducing the reliance on artificial heating and cooling to create a more stable, comfortable, and energy-efficient home.
Yes. The natural density and mass of our solid stone blocks provide strong acoustic separation. Whether applied as a double-skin masonry wall or as thick limestone cladding over a framed substrate, the material effectively reduces airborne sound transmission, ensuring unparalleled internal acoustic comfort for residential and commercial spaces.
Bruhn limestone is a completely non-combustible, natural building material. When constructed within an appropriate wall assembly, our limestone masonry can achieve Fire Resistance Levels (FRL) of up to 120/120/120. This makes it an incredibly safe, compliant, and enduring choice for builds in bushfire-prone areas.
Yes. As a premier Australian limestone supplier, we service residential and commercial projects across the country. Whether you’re constructing a contemporary project in Melbourne, a heritage restoration in Sydney, or a coastal retreat in Queensland, SA or the Northern Territory, our dedicated transport division ensures your stone pallets arrive safely, securely, and efficiently to your site boundary.
We understand that feeling the texture and observing the natural light play on the stone is a vital part of the architectural design process. You can request a physical sample box online. We also warmly welcome architects, builders, and clients to book a site visit at our Mount Gambier quarry to view the raw material in its natural environment.
To preserve the pristine faces of our architectural limestone, every block and mould is treated with the utmost care. Products are securely strapped, fitted with protective edge guards, and heavily shrink-wrapped on heavy-duty 1200x1200mm timber pallets, ensuring the stone withstands the journey from our quarry to your site.
Our primary delivery vehicles are fully accredited B-Double trucks equipped with all-terrain, truck-mounted forklifts. Because these vehicles are large, we require adequate street frontage to safely park and unload at the property boundary. If your site has restricted access (such as a tight inner-city street or a steep gradient), we can coordinate local “Last Mile” depot solutions using smaller rigid trucks.
Yes. While limestone is inherently durable, it is a porous natural material. We strongly recommend washing the stone once laid, followed by the application of a high-quality, breathable penetrating sealer.
For all maintenance and environments, we recommend and supply Environex Synergy Combination Consolidator & Sealer a premium penetrating sealer + consolidator.
Synergy is a premium protection product suited to natural stone. It consolidates and hardens the surface while deeply penetrating the stone to deliver superior stain resistance and protection compared with traditional sealants. It has been developed and tested to Australian Standards and is ideal for both internal and external limestone surfaces. Most importantly, whilst it is deeply penetrating and offers a superior seal, it does not leave a sheen or visible layer on the stone.
Sealing hardens the surface, repels moisture, prevents fungal growth, and ensures your stone facade ages gracefully over time.
For optimal protection and to maintain the refined appearance of the masonry, we generally recommend re-sealing exterior limestone walls every 15 years, depending on the specific environmental conditions and coastal exposure of the property.
The Hydrophobicity Test is a simple water bead test that reliably determines if a stone’s protective barrier is intact.
The Test
Pour a small amount of water onto the limestone surface.
The Result
If the water forms distinct beads, the surface tension is intact, and the sealer is functioning. However, if the water is absorbed into the substrate or leaves a dark wet patch, the hydrophobic barrier has been compromised. This indicates the stone is porous and vulnerable to organic growth and staining.
Limestone is a soft, porous material, so it needs a gentle, correct cleaning method to avoid damage.
1. Pre-wet the surface
Wet the stone with clean water to limit absorption.
2. Apply a pH-neutral cleaner
Use a non-acidic cleaner such as Environex REFRESH. Avoid acidic products, as they will damage limestone.
3. Light agitation
Gently clean using a soft to medium brush. Do not use stiff brushes.
4. Rinse thoroughly
Wash off with clean water using low pressure only.
5. Treat organic growth if needed
For mould or algae, use Environex GREEN CLEAN, then rinse.
6. Seal the stone
Once dry, apply a penetrating sealer like Environex SYNERGY to protect the surface.
Mount Gambier limestone has been used extensively in external applications, including coastal conditions. Like all natural stone, limestone will weather over time and develop a natural patina. Suitability will depend on the specific project conditions, detailing and maintenance.
Because limestone is an authentic, earth-drawn product, minor chipping to the edges during transport or handling is a natural characteristic of the material. A breakage or chipping rate of up to 5% is standard across the stone industry.
Experienced stonemasons easily accommodate this by utilizing these blocks for off-cuts or turning the chipped face inward toward the wall cavity.
While both are beautiful sedimentary rocks, their composition is different. Mount Gambier limestone is primarily calcium carbonate based with very low silica content, making it softer, and more workable. Sandstone is predominantly quartz and silica-based making it harder and more abrasive to work with. Architecturally, Mount Gambier limestone offers a smoother, tighter grain that is highly workable for intricate modern and classical detailing.
In most cases, yes. Our natural limestone is generally much more affordable than locally sourced sandstone. Because we quarry, cut, and process our stone using highly efficient, low-impact methods at our Mount Gambier site, we can provide premium architectural stone at a price point that is often comparable to standard brick-and-render construction.
Yes. Mount Gambier limestone is celebrated for its calm, sophisticated palette, typically offering milky creams, soft whites, and warm biscuit tones. Sandstone tends to feature heavier, more varied banding with distinct tans, yellows, browns, and pinks. Our limestone provides a more uniform and refined canvas, ideal for both classical symmetry and modern minimalism.
Both are exceptionally durable materials that have been used to build landmarks for centuries. However, the uniform density of Mount Gambier limestone makes it incredibly stable for load-bearing blockwork and precision-carved moulds, weathering beautifully while requiring very little structural maintenance.
The difference is significant. Mount Gambier Limestone is very low with 0.24% silica content, while Sandstone is largely made of silica and has a 60–95% silica composition.
