A study in enduring modernism and material honesty.

The Surrey Hills Residence demonstrates a restrained modernist approach grounded in natural material selection. Completed in 2010, the project employs super-smooth Plainface Mount Gambier limestone as the primary facade material, expressed in a single-skin ashlar masonry system.

The use of limestone establishes a quiet material contrast against the timber cladding and dark architectural framing, reinforcing the building’s strong geometric composition while softening its overall massing through natural tonal variation.

Sourced from a premier Melbourne limestone supplier and installed by Wilmoore Allstone, the limestone facade reflects a precise, disciplined approach to masonry construction. The uniform ashlar format and refined surface finish allow the material to read as a continuous architectural plane rather than individual units.

Over time, the natural limestone has weathered evenly, maintaining its clarity and tonal stability while reinforcing the durability of solid stone construction in contemporary residential architecture.
